‘English Cafe’ class at McDonalds 3 November 2013

“Sir, there’s a special offer for free coffee at McDonald’s. Why don’t we go and have a class over a nice cup of coffee?” said Justyna after I had asked what else we could do to make our ‘English cafe’ classes even more fun.

‘English cafe’ classes are those conversation lessons where nobody can speak a single word in Polish. I usually prepare handouts with Q&A activities and discussion topics but, generally, you can speak freely about anything and to anyone, provided you’re speaking English. And you can have something to drink – after all it’s supposed to be a cafe.

Justyna’s suggestion was excellent and so we went out of school on Tuesday morning and headed for McDonald’s. The weather was excellent and so were the students’ moods. On the spot I gave them handouts with questions concerning ‘personality’ and ‘change’ – to be discussed over free coffee.

Some students documented the field trip with their smartphones or tablets, using the Animoto application which I’d asked them to install. I hope you will enjoy the video made by Krzysiek Gołębiowski as much as we all enjoyed our ‘English Cafe’ class at McDonalds!

The Glamour and Style of the 80s at Wojciech Korfanty High School 20 April 2011

On April 6th 2011 both the students and teachers at Wojciech Korfanty High School had a unique opportunity to travel back in time and spend 3 hours in the 1980s. The English teachers, Ryszard Oślizło and Katarzyna Śnieg, had arranged two 80s-themed events. One of these was “A Chance of Success” – a song contest, where the students could show their vocal talents – while the other event was a visual-music programme called “Back to the 80s.”

ANOTHER CHANCE OF SUCCESS

Last year’s triumph of the “A Chance of Success” contest with Abba songs convinced the organizers to take up the challenge once again. The show’s hostess was Martyna Kosmala, and this year’s contestants sang the unforgettable hits performed by the greatest artists of the 80s, such as A-ha, George Michael, Cyndi Lauper, Roxette or Sandra.

The members of the jury were the top stars: Michael Jackson, Madonna and Wham. Their decision was both quick and unanimous when they decided to award the first prize to Małgorzata Cichecka, who had sung Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” and to give an honourable mention to Bartłomiej Brandys for singing „Always On My Mind” originally performed by Pet Shop Boys. The prizes – “Greatest Hits of the 80s” CD albums – were handed by the headmistress, Mrs. Halina Hrynczyszyn.

A fact worth mentioning is that after an excellent performance by one of the contestants, Monika Stuchlik, she was invited by the Eliminacja band – a co-organizer of the contest – to record a song with them. Congratulations!

LISTEN TO AN EXCERPT NOW!

This year, aside from the thrill of music, singing and all the emotions involved, there were plenty of surprises awaiting the audience. One of these was a contest to check how well they knew the hits of the 80s. A five-minute montage of 20 music videos was presented to the public and those who wished to take part in the contest were asked to name as many of the performers as they could. The winner was Adrian Malinowski.

No doubt, the main attraction of the programme was the performance of a music phenomenon of the 80s – Modern Talking – boldly impersonated by Krystian Nowak and Adam Piernikarczyk. Colourful lights and smokes made their concert even more spectacular, providing the audience with fun-filled entertainment.

Towards the end of the first part of the programme, both the contestants and the audience were challenged to sing one of the greatest hits of the 80s, that is “We Are The World”. The song lyrics were displayed on a large screen to allow the public to fully participate, which everyone did, eagerly. It’s worth noting that this hit was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa as a benefit single for African famine relief.

BACK TO THE EIGHTIES

Before the thrill of the song contest cooled, the public had seen Katarzyna Wowrowska entering the stage and inviting everyone to enjoy the visual-music programme called “Back to the 80s.” She announced lots of attractions awaiting the audience.

The first one was a ten-minute documentary film about how Jastrzębie-Zdrój had looked like back in the 80s. Both students and teachers showed a lively interest in this short history of their hometown. The former were surprised and amused to recognize on the screen some familiar locations which often seemed completely different from Jastrzębie-Zdrój as they know it today.

The next item on the programme was the film equivalent of the music video contest which the audience had taken part in during “A Chance of Success”. The difference was that this time the participants were asked to name as many film titles as they could while watching a short montage. The winner was Martyna Kosmala who recognized as many as 25 films.

Another attraction was a fashion show arranged by Monika Łączniak whose “The 80s Collection” was presented by models of the 1d LO and 3d LO forms. The show was carried out to the sounds of „Wonderful Life” hit, an absolute must for any 80s fashion event.

And last but not least surprise on the programme was karaoke which got the public carried away singing some well known Polish hits originally performed by Lady Pank or Lombard. After such energetic songs, Urszula’s soothing ballad, “Slowly Waking, was the obvious choice to help round off the event.

SOME FUN, SOME MEMORIES

Going by the enthusiastic response, the public had a very good time travelling back to the 80s. Excellent fun for the young generation, the event proved to be a unique opportunity for many teachers to refresh their memories and remember the “old days”.
